At the Affordable level, we'll use OSCommerce shopping cart, an open source third party shopping cart system that is very reasonable to customize and inexpensive to populate. Or our client can avoid paying us for population, using the easy administrative tools found within the program using a browser.
At the Corporate level, we'll build from a provided engineering specification detailing all front end user requirements and backend administrative functions. These may include read-only, read-write permissions based on user groups assigned, ability to approve content before going 'live', add or delete product categories and products dynamically, and many other features. If you can think of it, we can build it!
If a shopping cart engineering specification doesn't exist, we can assist in developing one for you. Typically, this excersize takes between 20 and 30 hours of time working with one of our engineers in identifying all functionality. We then provide you with alternatives and enhancements. When completed, we estimate each needed module in time required to build, modify and integrate. At the end, you'll have our estimate, as well as the ability to send this doc to other firms to get their “real” quote. At that point, a free quote should be expected from everyone else; they don’t have to spend the highly trained time to build the blueprint.

It DOES sound odd to pay for a quote, until you think about it. Front end design and search engine marketing are straightforward in approach. Give us a page count, and we can give you specific pricing with corresponding sites to review. No intellectual rights are transferring; just an expectation on sophistication and performance levels. Also, where do you want to end up on Google?
If you’re not getting requests for specific and detailed plans in writing and are receiving estimates for this work, just hit the ‘delete’ button before you end up with a very expensive and semi-working site. Similar to getting a custom blueprint for a 8,000 sq ft house, for free. Doesn’t happen.
Why?
Think of this shopping cart spec as a blueprint of your site. Front end capabilities for the end users, then backend data management using a browser. Needed reporting. All of it customizable and individually quoted, so you can pick and choose which elements go out in Phase One, and which are delayed to Phase Three in 2010. The question is, just how much do you need? And want?

Without this spec in place, we can safely quote an estimate between $10,000 and $50,000, which equals the scale of shopping cart projects we’ve been engaged for this year. And the first thing we would do is build this blueprint. We work regularly with clients who have received the ‘free’ quote from our competition for $7,500.
